What counts as a dental emergency
Not every toothache is an emergency. These three lists will help you decide.
Call us straight away if you have these symptoms
- severe or throbbing toothache
- swelling of the gums, cheek or jaw
- a tooth that was broken, loosened or knocked out in an accident
- bleeding in the mouth that does not stop with pressure
Call 144 if you notice these warning signs
These signs can point to a spreading infection or a more serious injury. In that case, call 144 (the Swiss ambulance number) or go straight to a hospital emergency department.
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- swelling that reaches up to the eye or down to the neck
- a high fever together with a swollen face
- vision problems or confusion
- a head injury or a suspected broken jaw
What can wait a few days
For these, an appointment in the next few days is enough. Use the appointment form and choose “Toothache” or “Emergency”.

- mild sensitivity to cold or sweet things
- a small chip in the enamel that does not hurt
What to do in a dental emergency
Call us and describe your symptoms briefly
Call us on +41 44 915 17 77. Outside opening hours, our emergency phone +41 79 524 74 40 is for real emergencies only. For anything else, please send us an email or a WhatsApp message. Emergency appointments are possible by arrangement. It helps us to know:
- how long it has been hurting, and where

- which medicines you take, for example blood thinners
Ease the pain and protect the tooth until your appointment
Cool your cheek from the outside and chew on the other side. More ways to ease the pain are listed further down.
What to bring to the clinic
If you have them, please bring:
- a list of your medicines
- the knocked-out tooth, the broken piece or the crown that came out
- after an accident, your insurance details
Getting to the clinic in Goldbach
The clinic is at Goldbacherstrasse 3a, centrally located in Küsnacht-Goldbach near the station. Access is suitable for wheelchairs and rollators. After an accident, it is better to have someone drive you. The directions to Goldbacherstrasse 3a show how to get here by train and car.
Common dental emergencies and what you can do yourself
The following tips are general first aid until your appointment. They do not replace an examination.
Severe, throbbing toothache
A throbbing pain that also comes on at night is often caused by an inflamed tooth nerve. Heat and cold can make it worse. Get in touch soon, even if the pain eases off in between.
Swollen cheek or swollen gums
Swelling can be a sign of an abscess, a pus-filled infection at the root of a tooth. Sometimes a wisdom tooth coming through is the cause. Both need prompt treatment. Cool the area from the outside, on and off, and avoid heat.
Knocked-out tooth after an accident
With a permanent tooth, time matters. Hold it only by the crown, the part you normally see. Never touch the root, and do not scrub the tooth. Put it in milk or in a tooth rescue box from the pharmacy and call us straight away. Knocked-out baby teeth are not put back in, but a dentist should still see the child soon.
Broken or chipped tooth
Keep the broken piece moist. If you see a red dot or blood at the break, the nerve is affected. In that case, call us straight away. Find out when a damaged tooth can be saved.
Lost filling or crown
As long as nothing hurts, this is usually not an emergency. Keep the crown and do not glue it back in yourself. We make a new ceramic crown in the clinic itself with the CEREC system.
Bleeding or pain after a tooth extraction
Some light bleeding afterwards is common. Bite on a clean, folded cloth for an hour, without lifting it to check. If the bleeding does not stop, or severe pain starts after two to three days, call us. For tips on the first few days, see recovery after wisdom tooth removal.

Toothache in Küsnacht and what helps until your appointment
Most toothache is caused by tooth decay and its consequences. Only an examination can show the exact cause.
What causes toothache
If it is mainly your gums that hurt, read about the warning signs of gum inflammation. Common causes of toothache are:
- deep tooth decay
- an inflamed tooth nerve
- a pus-filled infection at the tip of the root
- a wisdom tooth coming through
- a crack in the tooth that causes a brief, sharp pain when you chew
- exposed tooth roots at the gum line
- sinusitis
- teeth grinding
What helps and what makes it worse
Hold a cold pack wrapped in a cloth against the outside of your cheek, taking breaks in between. An over-the-counter painkiller can help. Follow the package leaflet or your pharmacist's advice. At night, keep your upper body slightly raised. It is better to avoid:
- heat on the cheek, such as a heat pad
- a tablet placed directly on the tooth or gum
- alcohol as a home remedy
When the pain suddenly stops
If severe toothache suddenly eases, the nerve may have died. The pain can then come back days or weeks later, for example when an abscess forms. Have the tooth examined all the same. Read how we treat an inflamed tooth nerve and whether root canal treatment hurts.

How to stop toothache becoming an emergency
Check-ups and dental hygiene
Many problems develop unnoticed. At a check-up, we detect tooth decay and gum disease early, before they become painful. Find out what happens at regular check-ups for early detection. You can also read how professional teeth cleaning with ultrasound and AirFlow works.
When fear delays a visit to the dentist
People who put off seeing the dentist out of fear often only notice problems once they hurt. We take time for you. Read more about support for dental anxiety on a separate page.
Frequently asked questions about dental emergencies
Is your question not listed? Call us or send us an email.
+41 44 915 17 77Can I reach Zahnklinik Küsnacht in the evening or at the weekend?
In a dental emergency, you can reach us on +41 44 915 17 77. Outside opening hours, our emergency phone +41 79 524 74 40 is for real emergencies only. For anything else, please send us an email or a WhatsApp message. We are also happy to arrange appointments outside opening hours. If life is in danger, call 144 immediately.
Can I see an emergency dentist without an appointment?
Please call us first. That way, we can assess how urgent it is and agree a time with you.
Which painkiller helps with toothache?
That depends on your health and your other medicines. Ask your pharmacist for advice and follow the package leaflet. A painkiller only tides you over until your appointment.
How much does a dental emergency cost in Switzerland, and does health insurance pay?
The cost depends on what needs to be treated. In Switzerland, the compulsory basic health insurance (Grundversicherung) does not usually cover dental treatment. We bill transparently under the Dentotar tariff, with our tax point value (Taxpunktwert) of CHF 1.13, and give you open advice on the costs. Read how dental costs work in Switzerland.
Who pays if a tooth breaks in an accident?
If you work at least eight hours a week for the same employer, you are also insured against accidents in your free time. In that case, accident insurance usually pays. Otherwise, your basic health insurance pays. Report the accident promptly to your employer or insurer.
Will I need an anaesthetic injection in a dental emergency?
We remove tooth decay with the laser, in most cases without any anaesthetic. Other procedures may need a local anaesthetic. For this, we also use intraosseous anaesthesia. The anaesthetic goes directly into the bone next to the tooth. This numbs the tooth itself, and the lip and cheek usually do not go numb. Read when treatment without an injection is possible.
How quickly does the pain ease after emergency treatment?
That depends on the cause. Acute pain can often be eased at the first appointment. After a procedure, the area may stay sensitive for a few days.
