Whitening and veneers guide
Veneers or teeth whitening: cost, pros and cons compared
Veneers or teeth whitening? The right choice depends on what bothers you about your teeth. The short answer: teeth whitening lightens the natural colour of your teeth, and their shape stays the same. A veneer is a wafer-thin ceramic shell bonded to the outer surface of a front tooth. It changes both colour and shape. At Zahnklinik Küsnacht we offer both. This guide compares cost, durability, pros and cons. Only the examination will show which option suits your teeth.

The difference between veneers and teeth whitening
Both treatments make teeth look lighter. Whitening works inside the tooth. A veneer sits on top of the tooth.
Whitening lightens the colour of your own teeth
Whitening uses a gel containing hydrogen peroxide or a related agent. Applied to the teeth, it breaks down the pigments that stain the enamel. The teeth become lighter, and their shape stays the same. Fillings and crowns keep their colour. Our guide explains what teeth whitening at home can do.
Veneers change colour and shape
A veneer is a wafer-thin ceramic shell. It is bonded to the front of a tooth and masks its colour. At the same time, it changes the shape and length of the tooth. Veneers are only an option for visible teeth, usually the front teeth.
Veneers vs whitening at a glance
The main differences between porcelain veneers and teeth whitening in brief:
| Feature | Teeth whitening | Ceramic veneers |
|---|---|---|
| What changes | colour only | colour, shape and length |
| Tooth structure | stays intact | usually some enamel is removed |
| Durability | one to three years, depending on lifestyle | many years with good care |
| Reversible | yes, the colour darkens again over time | no, not once enamel has been removed |
| Cost | usually much lower | charged per tooth |
| Manufacture | not needed | at our clinic with CEREC in two to three hours |
Amounts and sources are in the cost section. The table does not replace an examination.
When whitening or veneers can help
The starting point is the condition of the tooth. It decides which treatment is an option.
Typical reasons for teeth whitening
- discolouration from coffee, tea, red wine or tobacco
- teeth that have become darker with age
- healthy front teeth without large visible fillings
Typical reasons for veneers
- chipped or worn edges
- teeth with an irregular shape or length
- small gaps between the front teeth
- discolouration that whitening alone cannot lighten enough
When neither is the right choice
- If teeth are crooked, one option is correcting misaligned teeth with aligners.
- If only a small corner of a tooth is missing, we can repair it by rebuilding a chipped edge with composite.
- Tooth decay and inflamed gums must be treated first.
- Heavy teeth grinding puts strain on veneers. We will discuss this at the examination.
Cosmetic options and their limits
How far whitening can lighten your teeth
With a power light, teeth can be lightened by up to eight shades on the shade guide. That is an upper limit, not a promise. How light your teeth become depends on their starting shade and the type of staining.
What veneers can even out in shape and colour
Veneers can even out colour, shape and length and close small gaps. They are matched to the neighbouring teeth. The basis is a digital impression of your teeth. The scan captures your teeth in photorealistic 3D, without impression material.
Whiten first, then match the veneers
Ceramic cannot be whitened. That is why whitening comes first. The colour of the veneers is then matched to the new colour of your teeth.
What happens to your natural teeth
Whitening removes no tooth structure
Nothing is ground away during whitening. Your teeth may be sensitive for a short time afterwards, especially to cold. Teeth and gums must be healthy. That is why a check-up before whitening comes first.
Veneers with and without preparation
For classic veneers, a thin layer of enamel is usually removed, often a few tenths of a millimetre. This cannot be undone. No-prep veneers need little or no enamel removal. This only works in certain situations, for example with small teeth. Such shells can look slightly fuller. Our in-depth article explains how much enamel is removed for veneers.
Durability compared
Whitening fades over time
Depending on your lifestyle, the result lasts one to three years. For the first 48 hours, avoid strongly staining drinks such as coffee, tea and red wine. Regular dental hygiene helps the colour last longer.
Veneers are durable with good care
Ceramic veneers are durable and last many years with good care. The ceramic hardly discolours. Even so, a veneer will need replacing at some point, for example if it chips.
Weighing up the pros and cons
Teeth whitening pros and cons
- Pro: no tooth structure is removed
- Pro: much cheaper than veneers
- Pro: can be repeated
- Con: changes the colour only
- Con: lasts a limited time, and the exact result cannot be predicted
- Con: fillings and crowns do not lighten
- Con: temporary sensitivity is possible
Veneers pros and cons
- Pro: change both colour and shape
- Pro: colour-stable and durable with good care
- Pro: made at our clinic with CEREC in two to three hours
- Con: usually some enamel is removed, which cannot be undone
- Con: much higher cost
- Con: ceramic can chip, and grinding puts strain on it
Teeth whitening vs veneers cost
We do not publish fixed prices for veneers or whitening. We will advise you openly on the costs.
How dentists in Switzerland charge
Dental fees in Switzerland are based on tax points (Taxpunkte). The number of points, multiplied by the practice's tax point value, gives the amount in Swiss francs. We bill transparently under the Dentotar tariff, with our tax point value of CHF 1.13. The amount depends mainly on the number of teeth, the material and any preliminary treatment. Compulsory basic health insurance (Grundversicherung) usually does not cover these treatments. If you have supplementary insurance (Zusatzversicherung), ask your insurer beforehand.
What veneers cost in Switzerland: figures from Zurich
Zahnarztpraxis Am Weinberg is a dental practice in Zurich. For 2026, it quotes CHF 800 to 1,500 per ceramic veneer, based on its own experience in practice. For composite veneers, its figure is CHF 300 to 800 per tooth. In 2021, the directory zahnarzt-search.ch put a ceramic veneer in the canton of Zurich at around CHF 1,470. These are not Zahnklinik Küsnacht's prices. Our clinic is not in the city of Zurich but by Küsnacht Goldbach station.
No-prep veneers and their cost
The same Zurich practice quotes CHF 900 to 1,800 per tooth for no-prep veneers. Although hardly any enamel is removed, they are no cheaper. Only an examination can show whether they are possible for you.
How whitening compares on price
Whitening treats the visible teeth together. Veneers are charged per tooth. That is why whitening is usually much cheaper. Our whitening page covers teeth whitening cost and procedure at the clinic.
Can you pay for veneers in instalments?
Please ask about paying in instalments when you request your appointment. Some Zurich practices offer veneers in instalments through finance companies. With any such offer, check the interest, fees and total amount.
Which is better for you, veneers or teeth whitening?
As a rule, if only the colour of healthy teeth bothers you, whitening is usually the first step. If the shape, edges or gaps bother you too, veneers are more likely to be an option.
Questions to ask yourself beforehand
In Switzerland, tooth whitening products must not be used on anyone under 18. Beyond that, these questions help you weigh things up:
- Does only the colour bother you, or the shape too?
- Do you have visible fillings or crowns?
- Is a permanent treatment acceptable to you?
- How much would you like to spend?
- Do you grind your teeth at night?
Why we recommend a treatment only after an examination
At the examination we check for tooth decay and look at your fillings, gums, enamel and bite. Only with these findings can we say what makes sense: whitening, veneers or both, one after the other.
Examination first, then the decision
We check at the examination whether this is right for you. You can request an appointment online or call us.
How we whiten teeth and make veneers
Whitening at our clinic after a professional clean
Whitening starts with a professional teeth cleaning at the clinic. Then we lighten your teeth with a power light.
Veneers made at the clinic in two to three hours
For veneers, we scan your teeth with the digital scanner. We then make the ceramic shells with CEREC, usually in one appointment. A separate page shows how we make veneers with CEREC at the clinic. The examples from our practice show how typical treatments are carried out.
Our location by Küsnacht Goldbach station
The clinic is at Goldbacherstrasse 3a, by Küsnacht Goldbach station. Our contact page gives directions from Zurich by S-Bahn and car. The S-Bahn is Zurich's suburban railway.

+41 44 915 17 77Is teeth whitening better than veneers?
We cannot say without an examination. If only the colour bothers you, whitening is often enough. If you also want to change the shape or edges, veneers are more likely to be an option.
Is teeth whitening cheaper than veneers?
Usually yes, because veneers are charged per tooth. We will advise you openly on the costs.
Can you whiten veneers?
No. Whitening products do not change the colour of ceramic. That is why the teeth are whitened first and the veneers are matched to them afterwards.
How many veneers do I need?
That depends on which teeth show when you smile. Often several front teeth are treated so that colour and shape match.
Does Swiss health insurance cover veneers?
Basic health insurance usually covers neither veneers nor whitening. Your policy shows whether your supplementary insurance pays part of the cost.
How long does it take to get veneers?
With the CEREC system, we make ceramic veneers directly at the clinic in two to three hours. You usually receive them in one appointment.
Does teeth whitening make teeth sensitive?
It can, especially to cold. The sensitivity usually fades after a few days.
