Dental case studies from our practice at Zahnklinik Küsnacht

These dental case studies show how we approach typical concerns at Zahnklinik Küsnacht. The eleven treatment examples begin with a dental implant case study for a single gap. The last one covers a wisdom tooth without enough room. Each example sets out the starting point, our approach and the technology used.

What these examples from our practice show

Several examples begin with a digital scan instead of impression material. A separate page explains what a digital dental impression involves.

Typical situations, not patient stories

The cases describe typical starting points and how we proceed. They are not reports about individual people. That is why you will find no names or other personal details here.

Every treatment is based on what your own examination shows. These descriptions do not replace an examination or advice from a dentist. You can see what else we offer in our full range of dental treatments.

Why we do not show before-and-after photos

This page deliberately has no pictures. A photo of someone else's mouth does not predict your own result. So we show neither patient photos nor treatment results.

Case study

Dental implant for one missing tooth

Starting point

One tooth is missing. The gap affects chewing and speech, and often self-confidence too.

Approach

We plan the implant carefully. The plan is based on a digital scan and a digital X-ray. Then we place the implant. The final step is a crown made to fit precisely. More about dental implants in Küsnacht.

Technology used

  • Digital scan
  • Digital X-ray
  • Laser

Case study

Root canal treatment for an inflamed tooth

Starting point

The tissue inside the root canal is inflamed. This causes pain and puts the tooth at risk.

Approach

We clean the root canals thoroughly. The laser kills bacteria in the process. Finally, we seal the canal tightly. The aim is to save your own tooth while treating it gently. More about root canal treatment in Küsnacht.

Case study

CEREC crown for a badly damaged tooth

Starting point

A tooth is badly damaged and needs a stable restoration. Ideally, the solution should not mean a long wait.

Approach

Instead of impression material, we record the tooth with a digital scan. With CEREC we make the ceramic crown here at the clinic, in two to three hours. In many cases this means no temporary crown and no second appointment. More about CEREC crowns made at the clinic.

Case study

Whitening stained enamel with a power light

Starting point

Over the years, coffee, tea and red wine leave stains on the tooth enamel.

Approach

First we clean the teeth professionally, using ultrasonic instruments and AirFlow. Then we use a power light to whiten them by up to eight shades. How much lighter teeth can become varies from person to person. That is why we do not promise a particular shade. More about teeth whitening and its cost.

Technology used

  • AirFlow

Case study

Rebuilding a chipped tooth edge with composite

Starting point

A small corner has broken off a tooth. It shows when you talk and laugh.

Approach

Composite is a tooth-coloured filling material. For the repair, the shade is first matched precisely to the tooth. The material is then built up by hand, layer by layer. The shape and the way the repair catches the light are modelled on the neighbouring tooth. The aim is a repair that blends in. More about tooth fillings and saving teeth.

Technology used

  • Composite layering technique

Case study

Veneers for discoloured front teeth

Starting point

The front teeth are discoloured or irregular. Whitening alone is not enough here.

Approach

Veneers are thin ceramic shells for the front surface of the teeth. We plan them from a digital scan. With CEREC we make the shells at the clinic. Then we bond them to the front teeth. More about veneers made with CEREC.

Clear aligners with Invisalign for adults

Starting point

Many adults would like straight teeth without having to wear visible braces.

Approach

After a digital scan, we plan the course of treatment with Invisalign®. A series of clear aligners moves the teeth step by step. More about treatment with Invisalign.

Treating misaligned teeth in children and adults

Starting point

A misalignment affects the whole set of teeth, down to the jawbone. It also makes the teeth harder to clean.

Approach

It starts with an examination and planning, using a digital scan and a digital X-ray. After that, we correct the alignment with a suitable brace. We recommend a first assessment as early as the age of seven or eight. More about orthodontics for children and adults.

Technology used

  • Digital scan
  • Digital X-ray

Case study

Treating bleeding gums with ultrasonic cleaning and a laser

Starting point

The gums bleed or recede. This is an early warning sign. It concerns the periodontium, the tissue that holds the tooth in the jaw.

Approach

First we clean the gum pockets with ultrasonic instruments. Then we use the laser. It kills bacteria, and there is hardly any bleeding. More about laser treatment of the gums.

  • Laser
  • Ultrasonic cleaning

Case study

Removing plaque and tartar with ultrasonic cleaning and AirFlow

Starting point

Even careful cleaning at home cannot remove plaque and tartar everywhere.

Approach

We clean the teeth gently with ultrasonic instruments, including below the gum line. Then we remove stains with AirFlow, a fine jet of powder and water. More about dental hygiene and its cost.

Technology used

  • Ultrasonic cleaning
  • AirFlow

Case study

A wisdom tooth without enough room

Starting point

Wisdom teeth often do not have enough room. When that happens, they can cause pressure, inflammation or crowding.

Approach

First we use a digital X-ray to assess exactly how the tooth is positioned. Then we remove the wisdom tooth gently and take the time to look after you calmly. The laser reduces bleeding during the procedure. More about when wisdom teeth are removed.

Technology used

  • Digital X-ray
  • Laser

Every case is different. We clarify at the examination which treatment suits you.
